The prolonged isolation of COVID has taught me that I really have some incredible friends: novelists, memoirists, poets, musicians, songwriters, comedians, painters and so on. Also, I am terrible at keeping in touch with them. These conversations will be part catch-up with my friends (some of whom I haven’t spoken to in years) about our addictions and/or sobriety, our mental health struggles, and the challenges of the creative life. And these will be in-depth explorations of their work, how they work, what inspires them, and what’s coming next. Yes, I’m a writer and musician, but I’m a fan first. These are artists and people I love, and it’s my honor to share them with you. speed grieving with Joe Cardamone (Icarus Line, Dark Mark vs Skeleton Joe)
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Thursday Jun 09, 2022
Joe Cardamone has been on my radar for fifteen years but I actually met him for the first time at Lanegan's funeral. He made a keychain for Mark's friends like the old hotel keys, imprinted with "Mark Lanegan, the Night Porter, 1964-2022." This is our first real conversation and, man, it was really so fantastic to talk to him.
Los Angeles native artist Joe Cardamone has lived a few lifetimes while leaving a wiry dent in the global underground music and film scenes. The band that Joe fronted for 17 years, The Icarus Line, formed in East Los Angeles in 1998. Over the course of six albums the punk agitators became an underground phenomenon and the most dangerous, if not the greatest, punk group of their generation. The cult band that never gave up. Performances at the Reading and Leeds Festivals in front of 30,000+ fans, multiple appearances on the legendary John Peel show, criss-crossing the US in a van opening a stadium tour for A Perfect Circle and The Cult and a UK tour with Primal Scream are just some of the "greatest hits" of a legend loaded with nearly mythic live performances and chaos. But it was the death of guitarist and
original member Alvin DeGuzman in 2017 following a long battle with cancer, which was the actual end of The Icarus Line (a demise recently depicted in Michael Grodner's independent film "The Icarus Line Must Die" which is now streaming on Amazon and Hulu).
The following year Joe released his solo debut, the frenzied Holy War album and film on his own imprint American Primitive. Cardamone's new approach was a modern one man show that forged R&B and crushing electronics with the combative spirit of his formative punk years. While crafting a pair of follow up albums in 2020 the world stopped and the QUARENTINA project emerged in response. Outside of his work as an artist Joe has produced and collaborated with some of the greatest artists of our time including Mark Lanegan, lan Astbury, Warren Ellis (Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds) and James Williamson (The Stooges).

all of the animals with Star Anna
Friday Jun 03, 2022
Friday Jun 03, 2022
"To describe Star Anna’s sound would depend on the day, the show, the album, or the band. Alt country, folk, blues, soul, and Americana are all fitting, but what remains the central focus of every performance is her voice. Whether she’s sitting on a stage with only her acoustic guitar or backed by some of Seattle’s finest musicians, it’s her voice that defines her music. It is belted with a raw, grittiness that bellows from a deep, dark reserve. It is softly laid down atop gentle strings, aching and tender. It is spit out with a fierce recklessness that echoes the glory days of punk. She’s been compared to Joan Jett, Arlo Guthrie, Fiona Apple and Joe Cocker but she is unmistakably her own entity. Spare, fragile and gutsy, Star Anna is the real thing."

Do What You Want Forever w Kris Pierce
Thursday May 05, 2022
Thursday May 05, 2022
"You’re never too old, too broke or too busy. Do what you want forever. Start at the bottom bust your ass til you get to the top."
Coke, guns, and wrestling in the streets... I fucking love Kris Pierce. When I look back at my life, I don't see any justification for how far off the rails I went. Kris endured pretty hardcore abuse and abandonment as a child but somehow never turned into a drunk/ druggie/ degenerate/ asshole. Instead, somehow wrestling, hardcore, and comedy led him to become a successful podcaster and... wait for it... a social worker. Sorry to do this to you, Kris, but this is legit inspirational.
Kris Pierce is a comedian, podcaster, and pro wrestler. Listen to his podcast, Death Metal Dicks

EVERYTHING MUST GO with Keith Buckley (ex Every Time I Die)
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
Thursday Apr 28, 2022
Now that I am a grizzled podcasting veteran with whoahhhh 12 entire episodes behind him, I can look back at the good old days and identify tropes that unfold on nearly every episode. On nearly every episode, I talk about having near instant kinship with my guest. With Keith Buckley, man, I don't know, every time we talk, we're both restraining ourselves from going right into the woo shit. He's one of those 'deck of tarot cards' people: from minute to minute, he feels like my younger brother/ older brother/ nephew/ uncle/ son/ father. We have spent very little time together in the real world to feel this much love and trust. I would absolutely walk through fire with him.
Keith's been going through some shit lately. He's gotten sober, his marriage ended, his band of 20 years ended. I'll confess, I was super worried about him. But he really sounds awesome. And I'm super proud of this conversation with him.
Keith Buckley happens to be a 42 year old guy living in Buffalo, NY. He wrote two books and called them SCALE and WATCH. He used to be in a band called Every Time I Die. His wife Angie just got accepted into MENSA. His 6 year old daughter Zuzu just got her ears pierced.

How to Not Give Up w Luisa Diez from Why You Mad
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Thursday Apr 21, 2022
Wow, I didn't even make it through six months before breaking from my self-imposed structure for the podcast... lately, I've been listening to a lot of Why You Mad, a podcast hosted by my old friend Jake Flores and Luisa Diez. I've found their conversations about pop culture, gender, sex & sexuality to be incredibly helpful during my "rebuilding" year. Even when I don't agree with her (maybe especially when I don't agree with her) I've found Luisa's takes to spur me on because she's done her research and always brings footnotes to a slugfest. I had to have her on, try to find out what makes her tick.

Big Badger Energy with Rich Wilson
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
Thursday Apr 14, 2022
I honestly don't know what's wrong with Rich Wilson. By which I mean that he is a joyous artist and, having fallen prey to the trope of the "tortured artist" so many times in my life, I find his persistent good cheer hard to understand. I also feel an incredibly deep kinship with this man on the other side of the ocean who I think I've actually only hung out with in person twice. Rich's podcast, Insane in the Men Brain is brilliant enough that I consider it canon for my own podcast, by which I mean that I intend to rip it off as mercilessly as possible. As soon as I broke down and finally decided to do this silly thing, I knew I had to get Rich on as one of my first guests.
Rich Wilson is a multi award winning comedian and podcast host. For the first 10 years of
his comedy career, Rich cut his comedic teeth at all of the UK’s major comedy clubs and has
remained a steadfast presence on the British comedy circuit ever since. This has taken him
around the world, culminating in multi award winning, sell out shows at the biggest comedy
festivals such as Melbourne, Perth and New Zealand. In 2017 Rich won “Best International
Act” at the New Zealand Comedy Festival and was nominated for the same award the
following year. In 2019 he won another comedy award for “Best show of the Festival” with
Just Be Botanicals at the Edinburgh Fringe festival.
Rich Wilson is a multi award winning
comedian and podcast host of Insane In The Men Brain and Insane In The Fem Brain where
he talks to funny and interesting people about their experiences with mental health featuring
interviews with Heston Blumenthal, Felicity Hayward, Nicholas Pinnock, Michael Smiley,
Jessica Fostekew, Scroobius Pip and many more. He has earned himself an award for “Best
Podcast” with JOE and gained a nomination for “Best Social Conscience Podcast” at the
Podbible Poll Winners Awards. Rich is also an indemand podcast guest and has been
