The prolonged isolation of COVID has taught me that I really have some incredible friends: novelists, memoirists, poets, musicians, songwriters, comedians, painters and so on. Also, I am terrible at keeping in touch with them. These conversations will be part catch-up with my friends (some of whom I haven’t spoken to in years) about our addictions and/or sobriety, our mental health struggles, and the challenges of the creative life. And these will be in-depth explorations of their work, how they work, what inspires them, and what’s coming next. Yes, I’m a writer and musician, but I’m a fan first. These are artists and people I love, and it’s my honor to share them with you. Around the same time, my mother discovered a mass in her throat that was *probably not* cancer and my father was diagnosed with a mass on his kidney that was definitely cancer. So I figured we were probably due for a little catch-up with my mom. I scream, you scream, we all scream for cancer!

Timo Ellis (Netherlands/ Cibo Matto/ Sean Lennon)
Thursday Oct 06, 2022
Thursday Oct 06, 2022
TIMO ELLIS is a musician, composer, and producer. He lives and works in New York City, where he was born and raised. A vocalist and multi-instrumentalist, Ellis has appeared on almost 100 albums in total over the past twenty years. He has recorded and toured with such artists as Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Cibo Matto, Joan As Police Woman, and Spacehog, and has variously performed and collaborated with Mark Ronson, John Zorn, The Melvins, Ween, The Lemonheads, Money Mark, and Gibby Haynes.
Ellis’ extreme versatility has placed him in the company of musical greats of several genres – within his solo work exists an equally vast range of styles. Since the early 2000's, he has composed and recorded more than thirty solo albums under his own name and with his main band, Netherlands. Traversing the realms of rock, punk, metal, soul, lo-fi, folk/ country, electronics, and beyond, Ellis’ diverse music is unified by a few constants: impeccable songcraft, blazing technique, quirky experimentalism, and sheer intensity. His solo works have been described with phrases like “an absolute, burning blur of a song” (CMJ), “overridden-in-the-red propulsion” (Noisey), and “gritty, high energy… rambunctious” (BrooklynVegan).

Aaron Lazar (D’NT, Giraffes)
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
Thursday Sep 29, 2022
The Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock, punk, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer Aaron Lazar has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago’s legendary Double Door, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set.
I've known Aaron for more than 20 years now and he's one of my closest friends. We have Been In Some Shit together. We've toured together, I punched him in the neck, I returned his rental car the first time he died, we were in a band together and it broke up in a hail of recrimination. We're still friends. I'm eerily close with his cat, Bill. We talk a lot here about how death renewed his interest in life and I think it's a really useful conversation. We also play a couple of new songs, one from his band D'NT with former Beat the Devil drummer Mitchell King and one from the Giraffes. Enjoy.

Mike Wiebe (Riverboat Gamblers/ Drakulas)
Thursday Sep 08, 2022
Thursday Sep 08, 2022
Mike Wiebe is a musician, actor, and stand-up comedian from Texas. Originally from Denton, he now lives in Austin. Wiebe is the lead singer of several nationally known Austin-based bands including Drakulas, High Tension Wires, and his most longstanding group, Riverboat Gamblers, with whom he has released six albums since 1997.
Wiebe is known for a high-energy performance style which has led to frequent accidental self-injury, which, in turn, has fed back into his iconic status in Texas punk rock. He suffered a collapsed lung after a crowd-surfing accident in 2016. He once accidentally broke a gas main while swinging from the rafters of a club in Denton, Texas, filling the room with flammable gas.
Since 2013, his work has also turned increasingly toward comedy, including two works released by Grammy-winning comedy label Stand Up! Records.
Mike Wiebe is really one of the coolest people I know, a true artist. I can't believe we're pals. We close out the show with Worried About Me by Mike & Ian's Sidehustle (w/ Ian from Riverboat Gamblers) and Shame by Drakulas.

Shanna Christmas was born and raised in Las Vegas, NV. She is a stand up comedian, writer, actor and producer. She stands at 6’3’’ and played volleyball in college, despite much protest.
Her comedy style has been described as “Edgy/Classy” as she finds ways to speak about complicated issues that can offend, but she’s so charming that you can’t be mad at her.
Shanna has performed across North America, including Montreal and Edmonton in Canada. You can see her backside on episode 5 of Amazon’s “Inside Jokes” cause she crashed JFL.
Shanna’s festival appearances include the 208 Festival, Altercation Festival, Black Girl Giggles, Black Women In Comedy Festival (NY) and the Devil Cup Festival, where she took home the trophy in 2018. She was also a finalist in the inaugural ABFF Comedy fest in 2021.
