The prolonged isolation of COVID has taught me that I really have some incredible friends: novelists, memoirists, poets, musicians, songwriters, comedians, painters and so on. Also, I am terrible at keeping in touch with them. These conversations will be part catch-up with my friends (some of whom I haven’t spoken to in years) about our addictions and/or sobriety, our mental health struggles, and the challenges of the creative life. And these will be in-depth explorations of their work, how they work, what inspires them, and what’s coming next. Yes, I’m a writer and musician, but I’m a fan first. These are artists and people I love, and it’s my honor to share them with you. Now that I am a grizzled podcasting veteran with whoahhhh 12 entire episodes behind him, I can look back at the good old days and identify tropes that unfold on nearly every episode. On nearly every episode, I talk about having near instant kinship with my guest. With Keith Buckley, man, I don't know, every time we talk, we're both restraining ourselves from going right into the woo shit. He's one of those 'deck of tarot cards' people: from minute to minute, he feels like my younger brother/ older brother/ nephew/ uncle/ son/ father. We have spent very little time together in the real world to feel this much love and trust. I would absolutely walk through fire with him.
Keith's been going through some shit lately. He's gotten sober, his marriage ended, his band of 20 years ended. I'll confess, I was super worried about him. But he really sounds awesome. And I'm super proud of this conversation with him.
Keith Buckley happens to be a 42 year old guy living in Buffalo, NY. He wrote two books and called them SCALE and WATCH. He used to be in a band called Every Time I Die. His wife Angie just got accepted into MENSA. His 6 year old daughter Zuzu just got her ears pierced.
